ASSET USAGE

With this creature asset, I wanted to explore creating my own flying creature blueprint in Unreal Engine 5. Since Unreal does not natively have 3D AI locomotion logic, I wrote my own in a "Flying Creature" custom blueprint class. Below is a video demonstrating all of the features.

I had also rendered out a short animation test of these guys for fun. The whisker motion on the Maya rig is actually driven primarily by an expression which essentially samples values from previous keyframes and offsets the whisker controls all the way down the chain, creating the illusion of dynamics. I never really did this on any future assets of mine, since expressions tend to be a bit temporally unstable (especially when you try to use cached playback), but it was a fun experiment.

Both the visual design of this creature, as well as the dynamic tail motion I created in Unreal Engine, were inspired by some of the creatures featured in the survival/exploration game Subnautica. Particularly, the Sea Dragon Leviathan and the Bone Shark.
